GJEL Accident Attorneys Urges Summer Safety on the Water 1Each season comes with a new set of activities made possible by the change in schedules and weather. Though summer tends to be a little depressing for me for its lack of opportunities to ski, there are more chances for activities in parks, on lakes, and under the sun. Along with these new activities come the danger of a new set of injuries unique to the summer.

In 2009, boat operators under 18 years-old were involved in 37 accidents in California alone, a 51 percent increase over 2008 according to the California Department of Boating and Waterways. Overall, California saw 627 water accidents last year that resulted in about 400 injuries and 50 deaths.

Due to the increased safety risk that accompanies summer fun, GJEL Accident Attorneys urges families to take extra precautions while playing on the lake this summer. “Summer is the peak season for fun, and water sports are some of the most exciting activities for families,” said GJEL Managing Partner Andrew Gillin. “While everyone is enjoying, we encourage parents to impose a few rules and responsibilities on their teens and also not to consume alcohol while on the water.”

So continue to have a great time while on the water this summer. But while you’re at it, take GJEL’s advice and take a few extra steps for safety. That way, you’ll make it through to the winter in time get a few turns in up on the mountain.
