Write Your Story: The Splendid Gift of Not Knowing, Writer Workshop with Denise Michelle Harris
Tuesday, December 8th @ 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., Hayward Main Library, 835 C St. at Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA. 94541 (2 Blocks from Hayward BART)
Denise Michelle Harris, author of the bestselling novel Sweet Bye-Bye, continues her free writer’s workshop series. One of the most common fears expressed by writers is, “I don’t have any good ideas.” A difficult lesson a writer must learn is that uncertainty is an integral part of the writing process. Denise will lead workshop participants in exercises from The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante, aimed at helping you to harness the inevitable doubt and uncertainty of the creative process in order to begin discovering your own voice and material. This workshop will be based on Chapter 2: The Splendid Gift of Not Knowing. Workshop participants can complete the exercises before class, and, time permitting, will have the opportunity to share excerpts from their writing with other workshop participants. Bring your questions and get your creative juices going. Advance registration required – call 510-881-7980 to sign up. For more information, or to obtain the writing exercises, contact Sally Thomas at 510-881-7700.

First Friday Reception at Blankspace
This is Not My Beautiful Life—a two person exhibition with Michael Hall and Daniel Healey

For this exhibition we are pairing two painters with radically different approaches to painting, but whom are both dealing with subjects of history, domesticity and narrative.

Michael Halls work begins with an observation of history. He is particularly interested in historical narratives found in discarded photographs. Whether public or private these artifacts retain the ability to generate a dialogue not only about the time they originated but give perspective on current events as well. The resulting paintings are meticulous, photo realistic renderings.

Daniel Healey also begins with discarded photographs, but from magazines and reproductions. He creates colorful landscapes by layering paint, images transfers and mixed media. At first glance, the canvases appear to display a scene of chaos and disembodied domestic objects, further inspection reveals delicate lines, subtle color variances and a well thought out landscaping.

Accordions against Cancer: A Benefit for the Oakland Women’s Cancer Resource Center
Come out to the Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community center on November 12th to rally together and help raise money for the Oakland Women’s Cancer Resource Center (http://www.wcrc.org/)- at the event - Accordions Against Cancer. Culann’s Hounds, Lou’s Casserole, as well as David Gans, Val Romero and members of Circus Bella will be rocking the stage. It’s definitely going to be a wonderful night!

About the performers-

Big Lou’s Casserole – - http://www.accordionpr…/ Big Lou’s Casserole is always the life of the party. Polkas, waltzes, cha-chas, tangos, western swing, you name ‘em, they play ‘em (unless you name disco, in which case, shame on you.) The band has been together for more than ten years. They play family fairs, polka festivals, nightclubs, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, senior centers, music festivals, beer festivals and Oktoberfests. Based in San Francisco, they have played as far afield as Milwaukee, Pittsburg and New York City. The band always entertains.

Culann’s Hounds - http://www.sfhounds.co…. Name a musical act after one of the great warriors of Irish legend, and you’d better be prepared to crank out some energetic, larger-than-life performances. That’s precisely why Culann’s Hounds has been a favorite on the San Francisco scene for six years–and is now bringing their self-described punk-Irish-hoedown sensibility to a larger audience. The melodies of Steve Gardner (fiddle) and Renee de la Prade (button accordion); harmonies of Mike Kelleher (guitar); and rhythm of Scott Marshall’s bodhran meld with rich vocals that are a staple of the Irish tradition. The band boasts an impressive musical pedigree: Gardner played Red Rocks with Grammy winning favorites Blues Traveler; and wows crowds with his work on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and vocals. Kelleher’s ability to connect with and uplift a crowd with raucous humor and hard driving songs is a key; Marshall’s years drumming for punk band The Nuns gives him the straight ahead power that he harnesses on the bodhrán (and instrument he learned at the beginning of his stint with the Hounds); and de la Prade the Berklee graduate (barely, she says) started her love affair with the Cairdin Irish button box backstage at a Pogues show.

David Gans - http://www.trufun.com/ -

Circus Bella - http://www.circusbella…/ - Circus Bella is an open air, one-ring circus featuring contemporary, high-level acts set to an original score performed by live musicians. David Hunt and Abigail Munn created Circus Bella in the spring of 2008 to respond to a common dream for accessible and high quality circus in the San Francisco Bay Area. Together, with band director / composer, Rob Reich, they assembled themselves into an ensemble company of 7-10 performing artists and a quintet of musicians.

Kirchenabendmusik. Music of Mendelssohn, Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert
Take a musical trip to Old Vienna, and in your mind’s eye, sit in historic St. Stephen’s Cathedral for a candlelit Vespers service. This is exactly what Artists’ Vocal Ensemble (AVE) will bring to life on the second weekend of October. With the music of Vienna’s four favorite sons, Mozart and Haydn, Mendelssohn and Schubert, we are transported to the Classical world of the early nineteenth century when Vienna and its sacred and secular musical life were at their prime. Under the direction and keyboard accompaniment of Jonathan Dimmock, the AVE singers will transport you to a golden age of melody, with unsurpassed part-songs of Haydn, geistliche Lieder of Mendelssohn, Schubert’s astounding “Song of Miriam,” and his sublime final Marian antiphon, “Salve Regina.”

As usual AVE pairs its programs with charity and social action organizations; and this concert is no exception. With the country focused on health care, we will share our East Bay concerts with two nonprofits, both housed at Oakland’s new, magnificent cathedral: Christ the Light. The first of these, The Order of Malta’s Medical Clinic, offers free medical services for uninsured children and adults; the second is the Legal Justice Center which offers free access to justice through preventive education, community advocacy, and the operation of a free legal clinic. Materials about both of these groups will be available at the Friday and Saturday concerts.

Exhibition: 10,000 Steps: A Profile of Four Squares
Pro Arts presents 10,000 Steps: A Profile of Four Squares, an exhibition of the artist group marksearch’s multi-year participatory stewardship project in and around Oakland’s historic downtown parks. These parks-Jefferson Square, Lafayette Square, Madison Square, and Lincoln Square, each occupying only one city block-are tiny spots of open space in the urban fabric of downtown, places where tai chi practitioners, men gathering for a pick-up game of basketball, kids in after-school programs, mothers with strollers, and the homeless can all come together.

This multimedia installation at Pro Arts will showcase the history of these parks and the diverse communities that surround them through image, text, maps and video. In celebration of the first phase of the 10,000 Steps project, the exhibit will incorporate an innovative series of events to familiarize the public with the parks and their neighborhoods, including guided walking tours (sponsored by the Oakland Heritage Alliance) and lunchtime demonstrations.

NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children
Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman’s New York Magazine articles on the science of parenting won the magazine journalism award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as a Clarion Award. Their articles of Time magazine have won the award for outstanding journalism from the Council on Contemporary Families. Prior to collaborating, Bronson authored five books, includes the #1 New York Times bestseller What Should I Do With My Life?
Did you know that:
Exposing kids to day-to-day marital conflict may actually be good for them?
Scholars can predict how two siblins interact as grown-ups – before the younder sibling is even born? How they do it: they observe how the older sibling plays with her best friend.
Dishonesty, it turns out, may not be an indication of a troubled child at all, but rather a sign of intelligence, social savvy, and an emerging, unique identity?
The more racially diverse a school, the less likely it is that the child will have a close friend of a different race today – so is school diversity backfiring?
For decades, admissions officers at private schools, and sifted programs administrators in public schools, have tested children as early as kindergarten for placement. Follow up testing in later grades shows that these “gifted” kids have been incorrectly placed 73% of the time? Late bloomers are being left behind.
Join the discussion to learn much, much more.

It’s no secret that the state’s budget is a mess. And though a deal was reached between the governor and the legislature to try and make the best of it, there are a lot of unhappy people as a result. Some of those unhappy people are judges and attorneys who work in courts throughout the state.

The state courts are closed one day a month for the foreseeable future (the furloughs will stop in June at the earliest). The idea behind the furloughs is to save the state some money. If the entire judiciary takes one unpaid day off per month, then that’s one day’s worth of salaries each month that the state can put towards balancing the budget. But cutting out that day of work means that less work is getting done. And while losing one day of work might not affect the average worker’s productivity, it does affect the productivity of an already tightly strained judiciary system.

A common theme that law students see over and over in every class is the question “how can we conserve judicial resources?” The question is an important one because it’s fairly common knowledge that having a judicial system costs something. And no matter what we are willing to pay to have that system in place, it is still a limited resource because time is a limited resource. There’s a huge number of people who want to use the courts, and a limited amount of time in which they can be used.

According to The Recorder , around the state yesterday judges and attorneys protested the furloughs by going to work anyway. Other staff picketed outside the Administratve Office of the Courts building in San Francisco. These workers are worried that the backlog will continue to grow, and people seeking to use the courts will be unable to. Judges and attorneys were perparing for oral arguments that were to happen today, and simply couldn’t take the day off.

In a field where we already value judicial economy and efficiency, it’s hard to see how things can get done with fewer working hours–but we’re going to watch the California courts try.
