Community-Involvement-Scholarship
The GJEL and TransForm CA Community Involvement Scholarship will be awarded annually to two high school seniors that have shown a strong interest in bettering their community through either volunteer service, participation in local programs, or activism. GJEL and TransForm CA will select two student award recipients, taking into account their community service projects, volunteer work, academic achievement, and financial need.

The scholarship is open to all Bay Area students graduating high school in 2017.

Each student awarded the scholarship will receive a check in the amount of $2,500 from the law firm of GJEL that can be applied to their college tuition, books, room and board, travel to and from school, or other expenses related to higher education.

Community Involvement Scholarship FAQ

What is the purpose of the scholarship?
The scholarship was designed to reward students who have shown exemplary leadership within their community. It will be awarded to students who have strived to improve their community either through volunteer work or involvement in community projects.

Who can apply for the scholarship?
To be considered for the Community Involvement Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

      – Must be planning to enroll as a full-time student at an accredited college, university, community college, or junior college.
      – Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
      – Have participated in some sort of volunteer service or community program within the past 12 months (letter of recommendation required)

 
(Preference will be given to students who show financial need. Disadvantaged students highly encouraged to apply.)

Is there any specified financial need requirement?
Although there are no set financial requirements, the student must confirm that he or she needs financial help for college. Applicants must also complete a short answer question discussing their financial need for the upcoming school year.

How does the student apply?
The student is required to email their completed application, along with a letter of recommendation and a copy of their current high school transcript, to scholarships@gjel.com by no later than Friday, May 5th.

What are the requirements for the letter of recommendation?
Applicants must submit one letter from a teacher or counselor OR one letter of recommendation from a volunteer supervisor or community member (who is not a family member). The letter should speak to the student’s community involvement and the impact their work has had.

How are the two scholarship recipients selected?
GJEL and TransForm CA will select the two applicants they deem to be the best representation of balancing academic achievement while working to make a positive impact within the community.

How much money will the two winning students receive?
The two winners will each receive a check in the amount of $2,500. The money can be used for any college related need, including; tuition, books, living expenses, or travel.

How are the scholarships being paid for?
The law firm of Gillin, Jacobson, Ellis, Larsen & Lucey is providing the necessary funding for the scholarships.
