May is National Bike Month, which means that bicycle advocates and lawmakers throughout California are boosting efforts to increase bike ridership and improve bicycle safety. Thursday May 12 marks one of the month’s most celebrated events, Bike to Work Day, and cities across the state are gearing up for it with major events designed to help make roads bike friendly and encourage businesses to promote cycling. We’ve compiled a list of Bike to Work events in San Francisco, the East Bay, San Jose, and Contra Costa County. San Francisco Bike to Work Day
- The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is hosting 25 Bike to Work Energizer Stations citywide.
- SFBC hosts Bicycling Commuter Convoys, which advocate safety in numbers while biking to work.
- Dress-Up Challenge and Bike From Work Fashion Show.
- Bike From Work Party includes DJs and prizes for $10 entrance fee.
- Bike Doctors, and maintenance training sessions.
- Free Bike to Work Day Raffle
East Bay Bike to Work Day
- The East Bay Bicycle Coalition is hosting more than 110 Energizer Stations throughout the East Bay.
- 2 Generations of avid cyclists will receive Commuter of the Year Awards.
- 3 East Bay businesses will receive Bike-Friendly Business Awards.
- The Bike From Work Party begins at 5:30 in Old Oakland.
- Registration automatically enters cyclists in the Bike to Work Day Raffle for dozens of prizes.
San Jose Bike to Work Day
- The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is hosting Energizer Stations throughout San Jose and the South Bay.
- San Jose’s Nick Laskowski will be honored as the Bike Commuter of the Year.
- The Bike Away From Work Bash includes food, beer, and music in San Jose and Palo Alto for $20.
- The Company Bike Challenge enables South Bay businesses to compete for prizes while promoting biking to work.
- South Bay residents can volunteer throughout the day for a number of important events.
Contra Costa County Bike to Work Day
- 511 Contra Costa is hosting dozens of Energizer Stations in Walnut Creek, Lafayette and other Contra Costa towns.
- Residents can nominate a Bike Commuter of the Year during registration.
- 511 Contra Costa provides a 5 point preparation list to make sure you’re ready for Bike to Work Day.
- The month-long Team Bike Challenge awards $1,000 to the team with the most bike commute points.
