The team at Grist has put together a nice little video of “biking basics for folks who’ve always wanted to ride, but didn’t dare.” Although a lot of the information is indeed fairly obvious (check your tires, figure out where you’re going, make sure you brakes work, etc.) the video does offer plenty of common sense tips that many urban cyclists would do well to remember. Chief among them:

“Cars are big. Be aware.

You are small. Be careful.”

In addition to offering the important reminder to stay alert at all times, the video goes over some good safety tips regarding staying out of the “door zone” and always respecting pedestrians (cough*no riding on the sidewalk*cough). And, best of all, the video was filmed in the great city of Seattle.
