A 58-year-old Santa Rosa man died on Monday afternoon, May 18, 2026, after his vehicle plunged off a fatal cliff crash onto a beach along State Route 1 near Davenport in Santa Cruz County. The crash set off a dramatic multi-agency rescue operation that required lifeguards to run and swim nearly a mile through the surf to reach the victim.
The remote and rugged stretch of coastline where this tragedy unfolded sits among some of the most breathtaking yet unforgiving terrain in all of California, where the Santa Cruz Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, and sheer cliffs drop hundreds of feet to the water below. State Route 1 through this corridor offers little room for error, and when something goes wrong, the consequences can be catastrophic, and the rescue challenges nearly insurmountable.
What Happened on the Fatal Cliff Crash
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 12:48 PM on State Route 1, about one mile north of Scott Creek Bridge near mile marker 34.22. The victim was operating a black 2017 Honda Pilot, traveling southbound, when the vehicle left the west edge of the roadway. The car struck a call box, plowed through roadside vegetation, and went over the cliff.
A witness at the scene reported watching the vehicle go over the edge. The Honda came to rest roughly 400 feet below in the surf zone, where heavy waves battered the wreckage.
