A serious traffic collision on State Route 70 near Boyer Road north of Marysville left two people with major injuries early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash, which involved a minivan and a John Deere tractor, prompted a highway closure and a medical helicopter response as emergency crews worked to free and treat the injured drivers.

What Happened on SR-70 Near Boyer Road
CHP officers responded to the scene at approximately 6:40 a.m. on July 8, 2026, after reports of a collision on SR-70 near Boyer Road, roughly seven miles north of Marysville.
According to the CHP’s preliminary investigation, a minivan was traveling southbound on SR-70 when a tractor entered the highway from the west shoulder and crossed the roadway directly into the minivan’s path. The minivan broadsided the tractor, and both the driver of the minivan and the operator of the tractor sustained major injuries in the impact.
Emergency crews arrived quickly and found the minivan with significant front-end damage. Because of the severity of the injuries, one driver was airlifted by medical helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, while the other was transported by ground ambulance to Adventist Health and Rideout in Marysville.
CHP closed SR-70 in both directions for roughly an hour to allow paramedics to treat the victims, process the scene, and safely land the helicopter. The highway has since reopened, but the cause of the tractor’s entry onto the roadway remains under active investigation.
Understanding Liability in Vehicle-Versus-Farm-Equipment Collisions
Collisions between passenger vehicles and slow-moving farm equipment are unfortunately common on California’s rural highways, particularly in agricultural corridors like the SR-70 corridor through Yuba County. Under California Vehicle Code provisions governing right-of-way and safe entry onto a roadway.
A driver entering a highway from a shoulder, private road, or driveway has a duty to yield to oncoming traffic and to ensure the maneuver can be completed safely. If the investigation determines that the tractor operator failed to yield or misjudged the minivan’s approach, that failure could form the basis of a negligence claim under California Civil Code §1714, which establishes that individuals are legally responsible for injuries caused by their want of ordinary care.
Liability in these cases can also turn on visibility, signage, and whether the equipment displayed the slow-moving vehicle markings required by law. Investigators will likely examine speed, sightlines near the Boyer Road intersection, and whether the minivan driver had any opportunity to avoid the collision once the tractor entered the roadway.
California follows a pure comparative fault standard, meaning that even if a court finds one party partially responsible for the crash, an injured person can still recover damages reduced by their own percentage of fault.
Calculating Compensation for Injuries From This Crash
Victims of major-injury crashes like this one often face significant medical bills, lost income, and long recoveries. Attorneys typically use one of two established methods to help estimate the value of a personal injury claim.
The multiplier method takes the total of a victim’s economic damages, such as medical expenses and lost wages, and multiplies that figure by a number typically between 1.5 and 5, depending on the severity and permanence of the injuries, to account for pain and suffering.
The per diem method instead assigns a specific dollar value to each day the victim experiences pain and disability, then multiplies that daily rate by the number of recovery days. For catastrophic injuries involving hospitalization, surgery, or long-term rehabilitation, these calculations can yield substantial settlement amounts, particularly when a defendant’s negligence is well documented.
Beyond the multiplier and per diem calculations used to value pain and suffering, a full compensation claim in a crash of this severity typically accounts for several categories of damages.
Economic damages cover quantifiable losses such as emergency transport and helicopter evacuation costs, hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy, and any future medical care the injuries require.
Lost wages and diminished earning capacity are also factored in, particularly for victims whose injuries prevent them from returning to their previous line of work, whether temporarily or permanently. Non-economic damages, including pain and suffering, emotional distress, and loss of enjoyment of life, often account for a significant portion of the final settlement in cases involving major or catastrophic injuries.
The final value of a claim also depends heavily on the at-fault party’s insurance coverage, since a settlement can be recovered only up to the available policy limits, unless additional sources of compensation, such as an umbrella policy or a third-party liability claim, can be identified and pursued.
