Study Shows Link between Child Autism and Antidepressants Taken during Pregnancy

Did you take anti-depressants during pregnancy? Was your child born with autism?
A new study by the Archives of General Psychiatry found that mothers who took popular antidepressants like Zoloft and Prozac during pregnancy were twice as likely to give birth to a child with autism. The class of antidepressants in question, called SSRIs, is known to increase the level of serotonin in the brain, a key symptom of autism, and the study could lead to a class of lawsuits against the manufacturers of these antidepressants.

Prozac and Zoloft among the Medications Associated with Increased Risk

The study’s authors, led by lead researcher Dr. Lisa Croen, identified 300 children born with autism between 1995 and 1999 and checked to see if their mothers were prescribed antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft during pregnancy. These children were compared to 1,500 children without autism born in the same time period. The study found that 6.7 percent of children with autism were exposed to antidepressants before birth, compared to 3.3 percent of children without autism. And children exposed to antidepressants during the first trimester were found to be four times more likely to develop autism than children not exposed to antidepressants during pregnancy.

Suspicions about a link between antidepressant use during pregnancy and the development of autism mounted as autism diagnoses increased sharply over the past several decades. Since drugs pass through the placenta, the researchers predict that antidepressants taken during pregnancy could impact brain development.

The class of antidepressants that could lead to autism if taken during pregnancy includes popular brands like Prozac, Luvox, Celexa, Paxil, and their generic versions. Prozac was the first SSRI approved in the United States, in 1987.
